Bits and Bobs

Things you might want to know.....or not.....about the Author

Q:What kind of books do you read?

A: I love fantasy fiction. I love being able to escape into different worlds where life is not ‘normal’, where strange things happen, where people find courage no matter their age, where challenges are met with heart and soul.

Q: Did you read and write as a child?

A: I can’t remember a time when I didn’t have a book next to my bed but didn’t start writing until much later. Reading was definitely my thing. I remember being called a bookworm in matric – and was devastated! I thought that I was a sporty person, playing hockey, squash, swimming, and I know the boys liked me J but my friends were right, I did always have my nose stuck in a book!

Q: What makes you sit down and write?

A: Having had a tough few years after my father died, I found myself asking real questions about Who I am and Why am I here? I decided to study Psychology, so that I could find out what was going on in my head, and instead found the world that existed within me, my thoughts, my Being. So now write around this theme in the language that I love, that of fantasy.

Q: How often do you sit down and write?

A: Not often enough. I try to write at least three days a week for a few hours but it never quite works out that way. Some days I write more, other times I find a week has gone by and I haven’t managed to sit down. But I persevere because I love my characters…they become quite real after a while (and tell me when they are missing me!)

Q: Where do you find your characters?

A: They seem to appear as I write. Initially, early on in my writing career, I thought I’d write a ‘serious’ psychological book but when I sat down to write it always felt like I was pulling teeth. Then one summer day, this young girls voice popped in, said Hello and started telling me about her life. I know it sounds psycho but that’s how it works! Now, I do my best to just find time to listen as she introduces me to her crazy life and friends – and to write it down and tell her story to the world.

Q: Do you use pen and paper or a computer?

A: I mostly use a computer as I can type faster than I write.
